Who is going to power the growth of the US economy in the decades ahead? Who will create the wealth to pay for an aging population? Answer: immigrants.
Our biggest immigration problem is not keeping out illegals. Our biggest immigration problem is getting highly educated Indians and Chinese to stay in America after they get their advanced degrees at American universities.
Used to be they wanted to stay; now many prefer to go home. And we do everything we can to send them back. That’s bad policy.
We need these highly trained and highly motivated individuals to create the companies and technologies of the future. How do we do it?
Give ‘em Green Cards. Earn a degree and get a Green Card.
If we just “steal” other countries best brains, are we perhaps going to be able to relocate our American “dummies” overseas? (Just kidding!)
To tell you the truth, I would prefer if more Americans got help with getting advanced degrees and entrepreneurial training.
We should not be stealing other countries’ best brains — they need those people to return and contribute to their economies. Our gain need not be somebody else’s loss.
We should be making sure that our higher education system is first class and free, or very affordable, to all Americans of modest means who want to study hard. Ask the Germans how they do it. From what I know they have great universities and students do not graduate with a mountain of debt.
