The arrow goes straight from Harvard and Stanford, through Thomas Piketty, public and community colleges, and fatally pierces the heart of the American dream. What have we forgotten?

First, that education is a public good, not a private good. The Boston Public Library’s trustees said it best – “The Commonwealth requires the education of the people as the safeguard of order and liberty”. If they were writing today, they might have included prosperity on that list.

Second, we’ve forgotten that taxation to pay for public goods is itself a public good.

It is ironic that the wealthy of America, the 1% who most benefit from those two public goods, seem to be the most vocal and powerful opponents, and that the unwashed masses of the Red States, who have so much at stake, remain in their thrall.
